This book is great for a beginning artist and useful to all as our skills develop.

This book is great for a beginning creative person and useful to all as our skills develop.

I bought this book considering I was struggling with perspective, especially for built forms. The book starts with exercises on how to breakdown a scene or object into its underlying shapes, and even the horizontal, vertical, and curved lines that make up those shapes. The volume so moves on to capturing various textures (forest, brick, paper, etc.), then sketching landscapes, capturing the homo form, then details of various 'difficult' trunk parts (easily, faces, etc.). The volume as well discusses cartoon/painting outdoors (which I actually enjoying) and working with different media. Each stage builds on and draws from the work washed at previous stages then you catamenia nicely to more difficult forms without feeling like it is as well hard.

Reyna encourages practising, suggesting different exercises to try to reinforce the lessons learned. He also shows how to apply your pencil to cheque line directions, and how to use a viewfinder to frame out scenes. Earlier reading this book I thought those techniques were 'cheating'; I take since discovered that if it is your work, yous can use whatsoever techniques y'all like and that even seasoned artists utilize these tricks, but it was from Reyna that both are adept practice.

Overall, a wonderful book to have on the shelf (and to exist used) by any artist.

Once someone wants to draw on a college level than scribbles, doodles, and badly washed 2-d characters, they brainstorm to wait for educational activity books - and larn many of them are useless. This is ane of the all-time drawing instruction books out there, and if in that location was 1 volume I would propose everyone to start with before picking upward the others, option this upward first. Once you've gone through this, both reading the pages AND doing the exercises, you lot will take the foundational knowledge of information (shape rules, perspective, light/shadow, etc) and workmanship (you will larn your strengths and areas you need to ameliorate, which means yous will exist able to get the all-time use out of instruction - instead of "mister artist, assistance me draw" y'all can say "fellow creative person, can yous help me improve my use of sfumato to produce more than realistic drawings? I can't become the technique quite right...". ...more than

I found the "lessons" incredibly hard to follow and while I sympathize that the author wanted you to draw everyday objects, presumably because that's what y'all see, the bodily objects were extremely boring.

1 thing that I did take away from the book was regarding drawing straight lines which I had never really thought about earlier. That was an interesting lesson. Merely I never could become past the third or fourth because I didn't understand what I was "supposed" to practise.

"How To Draw What You Come across" is a bones-level drawing book. I don't draw, but a girl that I mentor spends a lot of time cartoon. I thought it'd be fun to take drawing lessons together, just the instructor isn't very good at explaining WHY we are doing the various exercises that he gives to usa. I noticed that he was basically post-obit the lesson plan in this book, so I bought a re-create. The book does a much ameliorate job of explaining the concepts than my art lessons instructor, and I take the feeling th "How To Depict What Yous See" is a basic-level drawing book. (Hopefully you take access to a better teacher.)

Part One of this book covers xix lessons which are progressive projects that build skill and confidence. He covered drawing basic shapes, perspective, shading, tones, cartoon still life (indoors), drawing outdoors (which covered the differences from still life more than than how to describe copse, etc.), and drawing people and faces. I wasn't every bit impressed with the instruction in the cartoon people section, simply it certainly gave some nuts to beginning from.

Part Two gave the basics on how to utilize watercolor, opaque watercolor, acrylic, and ink. He gives projects using black, greys, and white paints. This section had less education, but I think it's mainly intended to introduce the idea of "drawing" using other media.

Overall, I felt that this book was very helpful and adult my skill at creating realistic-looking drawings. I'd recommend it to beginners who wish to learn this skill.

At the ripe old age of...well, long by my loftier school days, now I can draw a chair that looks similar a chair, a tree that looks like a tree. This volume teaches how to depict starting with basic objects, which seem simple plenty, simply the devil is in the details. You should stop reading and practicing sometimes.

I didn't acquire a peachy deal more from this book than I already knew. No uncertainty it would be more than useful to a beginner, and it was nice to accept some of my bones principles reinforced, but -- not to be arrogant or anything -- I do know how to depict a cube. I wish I could play with all the different mediums the author mentions, but even if I could afford them all, I don't call up I could mess with ink wash in my current living situation. (I'm reluctant to fifty-fifty use charcoal because it'south so easy to ruin my clothes and carpet with it. Yeah, it comes off, but non ALL of information technology -- certainly not all of the compressed stuff.) I promise to attend an "Intro to Different Mediums" course at a nearby art center to make up for this.

I had to laugh during the composition sections, considering the compositions I liked all-time were the ones he pointed out equally "bad." Well, nosotros'll hope there'south some flex in composition, or I'thousand doomed as an artist. ^^

Overall not a bad book; a little longwinded in the text, but certainly better than the awful "How to Draw Cartoons" blazon of book y'all'll find at your local library.

My Christmas present this year :)

A skillful starter for drawing/ painting. I used to draw/ pigment a lot equally a kid. Now wanting to pick information technology up again and to larn information technology properly. I intend to exclusively use sketching apps on tablet computers now, but that shouldn't make a difference every bit far as learning from this book goes.

This is an older book--1972--only the writer does a expert task of explaining the basics of drawing.
