Simple Drawing Of A Spider
This easy spider drawing is part of my collection of Halloween drawing tutorials. The collection has plenty of cute, not so scary drawing lessons, like how to draw a bat, a ghost, a pumpkin, a jack-o-lantern and of course a spider web drawing lesson. Combine the two lessons to make a spider hanging from a web.
The good thing is that this tutorial uses simple steps that you can do in just a few minutes. I've also added lots of ideas for crafts that you can make with this spider drawing.
To make the drawing of a spider, we'll use basic shapes to put it all together.
The steps can be done in both digital and traditional methods. This means that you can use a digital drawing tablet or a pencil and paper.
If you're looking for animal drawings that you can use for crafting, then you're in the right place for that too! Once you've finished drawing, you'll be able to upload your finished design to your cutting machine and cut out a decal using your simple spider drawing.
Too busy to draw it right now? Pin this post to your art board on Pinterest. Then come back to it later when you're ready to draw.
You can also print the instructions below. The instruction sheet has pictures of each step of the drawing. As long as you follow this tutorial and watch the video, you'll learn how to draw a spider.
I get commissions for purchases made through some of the links in this post. There is no extra cost to you. See my full disclosure here.
Tips for digital artists
- Use the duplicate function to make lots of spiders at once.
- Zoom in and out with the Ctrl or Command key to see the details and fix small mistakes.
- Always save, save and SAVE as you're drawing.
Here is a tip that will add more personality to your drawing. Simply swap out the spider's head with a picture of your own face. This would be a fun Halloween art activity for kids.
I have a video and blog post here that shows you how to convert a photo to an svg file. Once you convert the photo to svg format, you can enlarge it, shrink it and use it for almost any craft project without losing the quality of the photo. The converted photo won't be grainy like you would get if you made a photocopy.
For an extra touch of personalization, add your name above or below the spider. Get the step by step instructions to do this in my So Simple SVG Quotes course.
In the meantime, since you came here to learn how to draw a spider, let's get down to doing just that.
How to Draw an Easy Spider
Let's start by gathering your materials to draw the spider.
Drawing Supplies
Digital Drawing Supplies
- Graphic tablet (I use this one from Amazon (optional))
- Computer
- Inkscape software program
Paper Drawing Supplies
- Drawing pencil
- Art markers
- Colored Pencils
My favorite software program for drawing is Inkscape. It can be a little tricky when you first open the screen and see all those buttons and menu items but I promise you, it's not that hard to figure out.
Plus, you don't need every single menu item to make a simple drawing. I use the downloaded version of the program but there is also an online version of Inkscape and other svg drawing apps that you can use.
In this tutorial, I'll use Inkscape and the calligraphy and brush strokes tool. The settings that I use are in the instruction sheet at the bottom of this post.
Remember to make sure that your settings on the calligraphy tool match mine before starting.
Draw a Spider Step by Step
For the first step, we're going to make a round shape for the head.
Then, draw a large curved U shape starting from one side of the head and then going back down to the other side of the head. This will be the spider body.
See the picture below.
Draw the Spider Legs
To draw the spider legs, make a line from the bottom of the head going down and back up to make the first leg.
Repeat this step to draw 4 legs on the left of the spider and 4 legs on the right of the spider.
How to Draw a Spider Face
Let's make a face for the spider.
Draw a small circle on the left and a small circle on the right side of the spider head.
These are the eyes.
Draw a curved line to give him a little smile.
The spider drawing outline is complete and you can move on to coloring the outline.
Coloring the Spider Drawing
You're ready to color your drawing of the spider.
To do this, use the fill bucket tool (fill bounded areas tool). Make sure that your areas are bounded (that means that they are closed with no gaps).
If you have gaps, double click on the gap, zoom in and pull the nodes to close the gap. Watch the video to see how I did this.
Using the side panel menu, click on the fill bucket tool. You can use the color menu at the bottom of the screen to select a color for your spider. I'll choose a grey color as my fill color. This is so that we can still see the face and the outline which was done in black. Feel free to choose any color that you like.
Next, click on a section of the spider to color it in.
Repeat this process to color in every section of the spider.
